About: Our origin story
The Connect and Compute Foundation was incorporated in Geneva in 2026 as the long-term home for open infrastructure, including open-source products originating in the Giga initiative, a global UNICEF–ITU partnership.
The CCF will expand capacity for exchanging value and creating fair pricing for connectivity and compute access - key commodities in the digital era. It will be a custodian of a body of open-source technology, data infrastructure, and operational practice for measuring, pricing, and financing connectivity to schools and public institutions. Much of this work has been developed in the open source domain, particularly by UNICEF in its support to the Giga project, and by many other actors trying to bring more equitable access to all. As with any open source community, the question of long-term stewardship will rely on partnerships, new technologies, and different types of financing. CCF provides these types of stewardship as an independent Swiss public-good foundation, with its own governance and a mandate focused specifically on the platform-layer infrastructure.
